    Problems for some storage providers…

    http://cloudstorage.wordpress.com/2008/08/09/problems-for-so...

Two mainstays of the cloud storage space have recently made disturbing announcements. First, TheLinkup (formerly known as Streamload and then MediaMax, and often confused for sister company Nirvanix) is now gone. They suffered a catastrophic data loss when transitioning to the Nirvanix backend and apparently were not able to recover. On the heels of this disaster, it was leaked that AOL will be shuttering or selling Xdrive. This is not nearly as alarming, as there is still every incentive for AOL to find a good home for the Xdrive users and there are a number of potential buyers. A variety of services - Box.net, ElephantDrive, and Drop.io - have offered to help facilitate the transition. What do you think these stories mean for cloud storage?

Box.net Breaking News, They are NOT going to buy the defunct AOL XDrive for 5 million

Late last month, AOL announced that it was selling XDrive for 5 million dollars by leaking it to TechCrunch as part of a move that would sell off most of AOL for Time Warner. Today Box.net representative Kenda stated that they are not buying XDrive from AOL, but that they have rather used the XDrive API to let XDrive users migrate to Box.net from their existing XDrive accounts. “We’re not going to buy XDrive, but we did use their API to build an XDrive account transfer. It’s pretty awesome, check it out: www.box.net/xdrive and let me know what you think. All you have to enter is your XDrive account login and Box.net account login info and in just minutes, all your data is transfered and ready to go.” - Kendra Community Manager at Box.net to Techlusive Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free? That is the real caveat of letting people export data from APIs when you are building a startup website or adding functionality. All this open API may have just lost Time Warner 5 million dollars in equity cash. You can check out Box.net’s migration tools for XDrive users here.
