NBC Kills U.S. Top Gear? [Top Gear]

    http://jalopnik.com/390760/nbc-kills-us-top-gear

With NBC announcing its upcoming program schedule, there's one omission that we found particularly interesting. Yes, it seems that the rainbow-peacock's version of the beloved BBC hit show Top Gear is nowhere to be found. While that's not to say that

Much to the relief of those faithful to the original British show, NBCs plans to create an American version of Top Gear seem to be dead for the time being. The network announced its plans for the new fall lineup and the pilot of U.S. Top Gear wasnt

We reported yesterday that both NBC’s Fall 2008 and Summer 2009 lineups will not include the U.S. version of Top Gear, but that doesn’t mean the peacock network isn’t keeping the show as a feather in its multicolor plume. There’s a section on NBC’s website for primetime shows being developed for the 2008-2009 season, and one page is devoted to Top Gear USA. We found its description intriguing. The show is described as three friends performing outrageous challenges and stunts through the “crazy transformations” they make to their cars. Sure, that’s one aspect of the show that Clarkson, Mays and Hammond built, but what about the new car reviews that are hilarious, real and informative, as well as featuring the best cinematography on television anywhere in the world? Also, we find it funny that the U.S. cast of hosts, whoever they may be, are described as being “friends”. The British hosts are of course BFF, having done the show together for years now, but we doubt the American hosts will have the same rapport right out of the gate. Regardless, if a U.S. version of Top Gear does happen, it won’t air anytime soon. Thanks for the tip, Joe! UPDATE: Here’s a great roundup of all the Top Gear USA news to date from Alex Roy. Friday Snippets

It’s good to be back! —— Over the summer here, we had a TV station asking for video auditions for an Australian version of Top Gear. The ones that made it on to You Tube were mostly quite poor. Thankfully we haven’t heard too much of it again since. Maybe the Aussie producers have realised that there really isn’t an imitation that would be suitable? It seems the Americans have realised the same. Thank goodness! —— I still hate Cadillac, but this is impressive. The question is whether or not Europeans would find it impressive to the point of wanting to purchase one, or many…… —— Per Eklund finished 14th overall in the latest round of the European Rallycross Championship. More over at Mike Jager’s site. —— Some guy named Joe Jacuzzi is taking over brand, product development and technology communications for GM Europe, including Saab. Surely he’d be better off with a health and recreation store? —— I paid $1.75 a litre for fuel today. I’ve never paid that much before and earlier in the week it was around 12 or 15 cents per litre cheaper than that. That was for 98 octane. Regular 91 was $1.60 per litre. —— How much do Saab need the 9-4x and 9-5? In Europe, just about every manufacturer had a positive sales month in April due to Easter falling a month earlier than usual. Saab were 0.1% off having a double digit decline. —— JL Racing kick off their 2008 season this weekend. Good luck, fellas! —— Monday will see workers return to the 9-7x-building-plant in Moraine, Ohio. The plant has been offline for some time due to the strike at American Axle. It’ll be interesting so see if sales pick up once stocks replenish a little. —— My rental car this week was a Mitsubishi 380. That’s their large sedan and it was supposed to be the car that would save their Australian operations. It didn’t. The lighting on the gauges was blue and quite dim. To adjust it, you had to press a number of buttons in a certain sequence according to a display on the dashboard and instructions in the owner’s manual. And it still didn’t brighten up very much. What’s wrong with a plain old dimmer switch?

    Top Gear USA update

Previously I wrote about Top Gear. Here are some updates: Regarding the American Adaptation, NBC decided to pass up on it, citing they couldn’t get a cast together! Well I have to say I’m relieved they didn’t try with a subpar hosting crew and then *Americanize* (read, *rice rocketize*) a fantastic show! If you watch(ed) the show you know how important the hosts are and they probably account for 80% of the appeal, though there are some SWEET cars they test! I really only have one regret regarding this cancellation, well maybe a few. After I heard about the adaptation and I was naturally skeptical, I heard they had signed Adam Corolla, who I think is funny, to host. I think he would’ve been a good Clarkson replacement. The other regrets are related to the coming *downers* regarding the UK version. They have announced a new season will not be beginning on June 15th!!! In fact there’s no word when it will return. The word so far is it only has been slated for 6 episodes! Also, those 6 episodes will not be filmed in HD so we still don’t have an HD source for Top Gear! For now I’ll keep busy with reruns, but they’d better get to production soon or… I guess I can’t do anything! BOOO BBC!

NBC passes on U.S. Top Gear for now

    http://barbarawoodhouse.net/1969/12/31/nbc-passes-on-us-top-...

NBC passes on U.S. Top Gear for now Filed under: Autoblog — Dan Roth @ 11:59 pm Filed under: Etc., Lifestyle, CelebritiesNBC's dubious attempt to duplicate the unique cachet of Top Gear with a Stateside spinoff has apparently come to a screeching halt. They couldn't even get it together on a cast, so the news doesn't come entirely as a surprise. The newly announced fall lineup doesn't save a seat for "Gear," though room is made in the lineup for that clunker of a retread that is Knight Rider. Seeing how much worse NBC has managed to make the campfest original Knight Rider, we're all better off without a watered-down, sucking-up, entirely neutered iteration of the original. Done before it even started -- we've all been spared by a mild outbreak of sense at a TV network. Thanks for the tip, r4m3n. [Source: Dark Horizons] Read | Permalink | Email this

“Gear” Probably Isn’t Dead, At Least Not Yet

    http://www.finalgear.com/news/2008/05/15/gear-probably-isnt-...

Autoblog, Jalopnik, and many other automotive websites have been noting that the American version of Top Gear is missing from NBC’s fall lineup and therefore are declaring the show dead and canceled. Besides the fact that we posted the same thing over a month ago, it’s probably incorrect. The much more plausible explanation is that the NBC executives are merely waiting to see how the pilot turns out which to the best of my knowledge hasn’t even been filmed yet. Gear may end up being a mid-season replacement for any show that gets canceled this fall or it may end up being a show for next summer. Either way, if I were you the reader, I wouldn’t place your bets on this show being dead until we actually hear exactly that. Not having it show up on the fall schedule isn’t proof. Plus if it had been canceled, don’t you think we would have heard something from Adam and his big mouth already? He wasn’t even supposed to mention that he was to be hosting the show and he did anyway, so I’m sure he would have mentioned if the show was canceled and he knew about it.
